We worked out what nine common coffee setups cost per year, assuming two drinks a day. For most of them the machine is the smaller part of the bill. What you put in it costs more.
Two drinks a day, every day. Each bar splits the yearly cost into the machine (spread over its life, plus upkeep) and the coffee or pods. The key is below the chart.
| Setup | Machine and upkeep | Coffee or pods | Total a year | Share that is coffee |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Super-automatic, specialty beans | $160 | $950 | $1,105 | 86% |
| Nespresso Vertuo pods | $45 | $875 | $920 | 95% |
| Drip machine, specialty beans | $40 | $790 | $830 | 95% |
| Nespresso Original, official pods | $40 | $655 | $700 | 94% |
| Keurig K-Cups | $40 | $400 | $440 | 91% |
| Super-automatic, grocery-store beans | $160 | $270 | $425 | 63% |
| Nespresso Original, compatible pods | $40 | $365 | $405 | 90% |
| Drip machine, grocery-store coffee | $40 | $225 | $265 | 85% |
| Pour-over or French press, grocery-store coffee | $5 | $225 | $230 | 98% |
Rounded to the nearest $5, so columns may not add exactly. Specialty rows use the average specialty price; at the lowest-priced end the super-automatic comes to about $845 and the drip machine to about $610.
Say you drink two Vertuo pods a day ($920 a year) and switch to a $700-class super-automatic running on grocery-store beans. You would spend about $495 less per year, and the extra $550 up front pays for itself in about 13 months.
That only holds if you keep buying ordinary beans. Switch to specialty beans and the Vertuo setup ($920) costs less than the super-automatic ($1,105). What you put in the machine matters more than which machine you buy.
Everything above is built from these per-drink costs.
| What you use | Per drink | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Grocery-store ground or beans | $0.31 filter, $0.37 espresso | US average $9.32/lb (BLS, July 2026), 15 g per cup or 18 g per double shot |
| Specialty beans | $0.78 to $1.08 filter, $0.94 to $1.30 espresso | $23.73 to $32.75/lb: lowest-priced to average among specialty roasters tracked, Q1 2026 |
| Nespresso Original, official pods | $0.70 to $1.10 (we use $0.90) | Typical 2026 retail range |
| Nespresso Original, compatible pods | $0.35 to $0.65 (we use $0.50) | Third-party pods that fit Original machines |
| Nespresso Vertuo pods | $1.00 to $1.50 (we use $1.20) | Vertuo machines only take Nespresso pods |
| Keurig K-Cups | $0.40 to $0.90 (we use $0.55) | Widest spread and the weakest source of the five |
Fewer drinks shrink the gap between setups. More drinks widen it.
These are estimates, not quotes. Coffee got a lot more expensive in 2025 and 2026, so plug in what you actually pay.
Machine cost, lifespan and upkeep (descaler, cleaning tablets, water filters) are round numbers for each kind of setup, not the price of any particular product. Reviews of super-automatics put their lifespan anywhere from 5 to 10 years, so we used 8.
| Setup | Machine | Life | Upkeep a year | Per drink |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nespresso Vertuo pods | $150 | 6 yrs | $20 | $1.20 |
| Nespresso Original, official pods | $150 | 7 yrs | $20 | $0.90 |
| Nespresso Original, compatible pods | $150 | 7 yrs | $20 | $0.50 |
| Keurig K-Cups | $100 | 5 yrs | $20 | $0.55 |
| Super-automatic, grocery-store beans | $700 | 8 yrs | $70 | $0.37 |
| Super-automatic, specialty beans | $700 | 8 yrs | $70 | $1.30 |
| Drip machine, grocery-store coffee | $150 | 8 yrs | $20 | $0.31 |
| Drip machine, specialty beans | $150 | 8 yrs | $20 | $1.08 |
| Pour-over or French press, grocery-store coffee | $40 | 10 yrs | $0 | $0.31 |
Yearly cost = machine ÷ life + upkeep + per-drink cost × drinks a day × 365.
